Introduction
Every Friday, my family would sit down to watch some classic Bollywood films that we never got tired of watching. Every time you put it on, it’s like you’re watching it for the first time. Moreover, it’s like deriving the benefits a first time viewer would get after the end credits began to roll. One such film that has become a family favorite is Hasee Toh Phasee. The film tells the story of Nikhil who is struggling to set up a business. A business he set up solely to impress his ego-centric girlfriend, Karishma. However, things take an exciting turn when he meets and fall for her smart and eccentric sister, Meeta.
In my opinion, Meeta is the best female characters to have originated from Indian cinema in the last decade. She was unique, unpredictable, smart, and extremely eccentric. And coincidentally, we are drawing some qualities of the Aquarius zodiac sign. Astrology has been one method people have used to understand the complex personalities of today’s people. We use our knowledge of Astrology to understand film characters who can be just as human as the people behind the camera or sitting in the cinema with their feet kicked up.
Meeta’s Uniqueness
The first word to summarize Meeta as the true Aquarian is her uniqueness. In general, Aquarians are described as ‘out of the box’ thinkers who are always thinking and coming up with innovative ideas and solutions nobody else could have thought of! Perhaps due to her uniqueness, Meeta is shown to be remarkably detached from her family as her dreams were different. So different that she ends up stealing millions from her father’s bank account and running away to Goa! As an Aquarius, once we have our eyes on a goal or dream, no one can prevent it from happening to us.
The iconic stapler scene
Other aspects of her uniqueness in the movie are clearly captured as she uses a stapler to cover a hole in Nikhil’s shirt. Or being so confident that she proposes to him on an empty bus at midnight! And come on! Who other than an Aquarius is confident enough to sing Anu Malik songs in a car with a guy she just met? As Meeta felt different from everyone, which is typical for Aquarius natives, she eventually used her unique personality to develop her own morals of what is morally acceptable and not.
Fun fact: this is an actual song!
Intellectual
As Aquarians, we crave intellectual stimulation and forming a mental bond with a person before considering a romantic relationship. Like Meeta, we see a character who developed a psychological friendship with Nikhil, which manifested itself in her developing feelings. We can understand Meeta’s intelligence at the beginning of the film when discussing sport cricket. She felt a cricket stadium should be revolving(clockwise and anti-clockwise) to make the game more challenging for batsmen, bowlers, and fielders.
As an Aquarius, Meeta never gave a damn about what others thought of her radical ideas(apart from Nikhil, the understanding Pisces). She eventually ran away to China, opening up her own lab. She showcased her intelligence by making a high-density polymer ball that powers an apartment building for twenty-four hours. It is no coincidence that the pioneers of ground-breaking technologies in global society were Aquarians themselves. (Gallileo, Charles Darwin, Dmitri Mendeleev).
A bond we’ve grown to love!
Eccentric/Quirky
As Aquarians, we generally laugh when people say we’re a bit ‘out there’ when holding conversations or just sharing a good meal. By this point in the article, you can guess what a character like Meeta would think of these comments. Perhaps Aquarians such as Meeta are so eccentric because her thinking and thought processes are hard to understand by others.
Meeta’s quirkiness was so apparent that she could engage in fantasy talks for hours, suddenly providing practical remedies to deal with hiccups to ending the conversation by giving yogic solutions for coping with stress. Oh, and let us not forget that she eats toothpaste when she is hungry. To be honest, if I was hungry, I would have eaten an entire tube. (please bear with my humor, I am an Aquarius after all).
Meta’s sign language. She’s trying to tell Nikhil she wants a wet towel
Meeta calls this “Swimmers Remedy”
Conclusion
Every time I finish watching Hasee Toh Phasee, I visualize myself giving Meeta the biggest hug. Thanking her for being her weird, unique, quirky self that cannot accept anything less. She motivates me to speak what’s on my mind, go forth with my radical ideas, and find the people who are willing to hear a crazy, but introverted guy tells them the fantasy stories he cooks up in his head.
Aquarians are so unique and quirky that like Meeta, we will never fit into any box society tries to fit us into. If you want to see the Aquarius personality of Meeta on the big screen, click here to buy or stream the film online!
Be like Meeta and just enjoy the moment!
