Introduction
Fantastic and complex describe Rumi’s character from Manmarziyan. Writer Kanika Dhillon and director Anurag Kashyap used creative aspects of writing and filmmaking to depict the crazy journey Rumi goes on.
If Rumi was loved by many, it’s probably due to the incredible performance given by Taapsee Pannu. One of the best descriptions was given in this article and I couldn’t help but discuss some of it here. Why? Because it captures the qualities of the zodiac sign, we will be discussing: Aries. Rumi is not afraid of anything life throws her way. She answers back to people’s bullshit, she believes she is right, she drinks and smokes, has sex in the hopes of having multiple orgasms, plays hockey, and colors her hair red. Funnily enough, Aries is under the element of fire. And what better color is there to represent this element?

Hotheaded Rumi
Although directed by Anurag Kashyap, the real credit for creating a strong female protagonist goes to Kanika Dhillon. Rumi is seen as a dominant partner who is quite hot-headed as she takes her decisions on an impulse. Through this dominating personality, she allows herself to choose between two suitors: Robbie and Vicky.
On one end of the spectrum, Rumi is involved with a young and eccentric Vicky. She engages in a physical relationship, much to her family’s dismay. Rumi and Vicky call their love “Fyaar.” (lust) Being a sign that hates liars and hates lying, Rumi has no regrets in accepting her acts after being caught in the room right after sex. In this scene, her hot-headed attitude shows her as a determined woman who has decided to stand with Vicky.
However, her hot-headedness is put on Vicky as well. Her impulsive nature leads to heated arguments with Vicky. She reaches the last straw by saying that if he does not get his act together, she will marry the first suitor their parents choose for her. This decision leaves the audience shocked! But who can be more impulsive than an Aries?

Independent and Outgoing nature of Rumi
Like all Aries woman, Rumi is a person who wants complete freedom throughout her life. She is very outgoing and gets along with the opposite gender quite quickly. She does not require a hand holder to solve her problems and would much rather handle them independently. These characteristics are shown when she lashes out at customers over which hockey stick is better and smacks the pani puri vendor for not making the pani puri spicy enough.
Rumi sees how much of a douchebag Vicky is and publicly humiliates Vicky over his complexes. She is not a toy that can be played with and put into a toy box needed. Her words were, “Tu banda na bada sahi hai lekin zimmedari ke naam pe na hug deta hai.”(You’re an awesome guy, but you always screw up when it comes to responsibilities).
Rumi has her own style. Her perspectives are new and unique in any endeavor she pursues and jumps into. With her impulsiveness and independence, Rumi knows that she has enough intelligence to accomplish the goals she has set for herself.

Optimistic
As mentioned before, Rumi has gone through so much in her life. The famous Sufi poet serves as the inspiration behind Rumi’s name. And it’s evident that she genuinely follows her heart and soul’s yearnings (hence the name Manmarziyaan). Moreover, this optimism is the reason why we see her running in sneakers throughout the entire film. Her soul is doing the leading for her, and she is merely detaching from the outcome. In her bedroom, we see a poster that says “Be your own hero” and “This girl can.”

Conclusion
Rumi may not be the most perfect character, and many state she is annoying and irritating. But what is it about Rumi that makes her so lovable and adorable? Perhaps because we all have a little bit of Rumi within us. We, as human beings, have our own strengths and weaknesses. We get mad at our loved ones, make decisions without thinking, and tend to sound illogical to the people we speak to. However, does this make you the wrong person? Not at all! It merely means you’re a person who sees this world and society through a different lens.
