Introduction

Dear Sushant Singh Rajput,

When your movie Kai Po Che came out in 2013, I was mesmerized by how the camera fell in love with you every time you stepped into the frame. I had to know who you were. And so,I went deep into the rabbit hole to know everything there was to know about the man who would be known as the successful outsider. I recall squealing in excitement when I found out you were a fellow Aquarian who had a fascination for philosophy and space.

I remember squealing again when I made your astrological birth chart and found out how we had similar placements that compared and concluded how similar our personalities were! Of course, this is just a ramble. But you were the Aquarian who rebelled against society to make all your aspirations come true. I mean, who would have been as confident as you to drop out of college in the third year, join acting and dance classes to perfect your craft, to eventually delivering consecutive super hits to officially make your mark in Indian cinema?

Your first movie, Kai Po Che was phenomenal. A film where guys cried as much as girls did!

Friendships

Rohini Iyer, wrote a tribute to you on Social Media, and I couldn’t help but quote her. You never gave a shit about what the press thought. You said what you meant and meant what you said. Hated fake friends and kept 3-4 close friends. Moreover you hated small talk and socializing, and instead, you preferred to reading countless books on your bookshelf that allowed you to broaden your horizons on what the world had to offer. You had many kingdoms of your own, where astronomy and unconventionality were its central rulers. When the Bollywood industry tried to shun your territory, you became the confident knight who stood his ground and stayed true to who you were. For that, I applaud you, my fellow Aquarian. I am sure you’re in those kingdoms right now, making your own place in the sun and studying the different stars through your beautiful telescope.

Your charm was on another level!

Unconventional

The successful outsider never aimed to be an insider? “Why Sushant?” is what all media outlets would have asked you. It was because you had a life that was beyond the films, wasn’t it? Because you had many worlds beyond the film industry? An industry that the average actor considered as everything? It was because you never cared about success. And to the critics, he never failed. He gave more superhits than any of his contemporaries did. And I’m sorry, fellow film critics, but 100 crore doesn’t mean success anymore. The majority of 100 crore films will never be remembered by the audience.

We will only remember the movie that taught us who to be or who not to become. And Sushant’s persona both on and off camera spread wisdom on how to truly live a life on your own terms. And being the best that you can be. Sushant, thank you for breaking away from the rat race and forging your own path. For not being a part of the Bollywood elite club. But for making a book club where the real knowledge mattered and flourished. Thank you for being real and walking out of an award function because you found it annoying. A step no actor would have taken.

A mind that was constantly thinking on how to help humanity

Accomplishments

Your accomplishments were out of this world Sushant. You topped numerous exams, and won a gold medal in physics. This industry couldn’t handle you, my friend. They couldn’t accept that for the first time, there was a genius in their midst. You were not just a genius, but an innovator who pioneered new paths for others to follow. Sushant, you read Sartre and Nietzsche, had a passion for stoicism, were a gifted poet, played the guitar, and could write with both hands! I felt you truly wanted to save the planet, helping us get to Mars, investing in charities, science projects, and making things that no Bhansali or Johar could ever comprehend and make into a film!

We loved you in PK!

Closing

I want to dive away from how the media is portraying you, my friend. I want everyone to remember you for the remarkable life you lived—the extraordinary work you did. When an actor puts his blood, sweat, and tears into becoming a character, the audience never fails to notice. And we always saw your dedication to every film of yours Sush. You strived for excellence and never dared to settle for mediocrity. Your friends say that you returned paychecks worth millions as you never believed in big-ticket films and godfathers. You never cared about money because you felt it never guaranteed success. I really wish I could give you a hug right now, Sushant. Your success felt like our success.

Your soul might have left your body, but your soul and its energy are still around us. I can feel it. I can feel your strength and wisdom guiding me and your fans to honor your legacy and remember you for the shining star you were. Every night I’ll try to find the most prominent and brightest star and smile. Because I know that’s you guiding us and blessing us with your positive energy and wisdom.

Sincerely,

Murtaza Hussain

Will miss that contagious smile of yours!
